Denholme Sailing Club Timing a Race at Denholme Here at Denholme we use a slightly easier way of working out the results of a race. For the Official Method Click Here
1. Time all the boats from the start of the race to when each boat crosses the finish line. 2. When you finish the leader across the line you finish everyone else after him even if they haven't done as many laps as the leader. 3. Convert each time into seconds. 4. Divide the number of seconds by the Portsmouth Yardstick (P.Y.) for that boat. 5. Do the same for all the boats racing. 6. The boat with the lowest results wins e.g. Converting elapse time into seconds: 1. Timed when crossing the finish line = 53 minutes 23 seconds 2. Convert minutes into seconds (53 x 60 = 3180) + 23 = 3203 seconds 3. Divide by the PY number (e.g. 1078) 3203/1078 = 2.971 Should the leader be a lap in front of some other racers, this is what you do: e.g. David has done 5 laps and Paul only 4 laps 1. Convert Paul's 4 lap time into seconds i.e. 3110 2. Divide 3110 by the number of laps (4) = 777.5 3. Multiply 777.5 by the number of laps David (leader) has done (5) = 3887.5 4. Then divide 3887.5 by Paul's P.Y. i.e.(1078) = 3.606 The colours in the grid are only there to help
