THE RYA PORTSMOUTH YARDSTICK SCHEME

 

Introduction

The RYA Portsmouth Yardstick Scheme, as it’s name suggests, is a scheme operated jointly by the RYA and it’s Affiliated clubs running races under the Scheme. Since the introduction of the Scheme in the 1950s, the RYA has always resisted publishing lists of Portsmouth Numbers without, in the same document, also publishing details of how the Numbers should and should not be applied and how clubs (the user part of the Scheme) should assist the RYA (the producer part of the Scheme) in determining meaningful Numbers for publication. This is still the case and is why both listed Portsmouth Numbers and associated text on how to use the Numbers are included on this web site page. In the interests of correctness, readers and users of the Numbers should also read the supporting text. Better still, buy a copy of the RYA book reference YR2 - RYA Portsmouth Yardstick Scheme (free on blue spot to RYA members), which gives the full monty including four illustrative specimen races together with details on pursuit and average lap races and personal handicaps.

Whilst always ready to deal with questions or suggestions from participating clubs, the RYA cannot correspond with individuals either on a particular Portsmouth Number or on general aspects of the Yardstick Scheme.

No part of this publication may be produced, stored in a retrieval system, or transmitted in any form or by any means, electronic, mechanical photocopying, recording or otherwise, without the prior permission of the RYA. If you wish to refer to this site on other web sites, please use the web site address and do not attempt to reproduce any of the information contained herein. To do so would be subject to legal action by the RYA.

RYA Objectives
The objectives of the RYA in publishing the following pages are to help clubs to organise fairer racing between boats of different classes and types by making available:-

  • Lists of Portsmouth Numbers
  • A method for calculating race results
  • A method for assessing and adjusting Numbers
  • Suggested clauses for insertion in the Notice of Race and the Sailing Instructions when it is intended to use the Portsmouth Yardstick Scheme.
  • An outline for pursuit and average lap races and personal handicaps
